Banking jobs in India's public sector offer one of the most sought-after career paths due to competitive salaries, annual increments, job security, and career growth opportunities. Public sector banks (PSBs) recruit through centralised exams conducted by IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) and directly by SBI (State Bank of India) and RBI (Reserve Bank of India).

IBPS conducts common recruitment exams for 11 nationalised banks including Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, Indian Bank, Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank and others. IBPS PO (Probationary Officer), IBPS Clerk, IBPS RRB Officer Scale I, and IBPS RRB Office Assistant are the major exams. SBI conducts its own SBI PO and SBI Clerk exams for the country's largest bank.

Starting salaries for bank PO posts range from Rs. 36,000 to Rs. 42,000 per month including basic pay and allowances. Bank clerk posts start at Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 26,000 per month. Both cadres receive annual increments, DA, HRA, leased accommodation, and medical benefits.
